When all the types of IFPUG memberships are considered, IFPUG serves over 1,200 members in more than 30 countries. The members come from every major industry segment including aerospace, automotive, banking, insurance, manufacturing, retail, and telecommunications.

Membership in IFPUG is open to any individual, corporation, university/college faculty member or student, or appropriate software-metrics-interested organization that is willing to subscribe to the goals and policies of IFPUG and wishes to join IFPUG in their pursuit.

Membership Types

IFPUG offers a variety of options to become a member as an individual or organization.

Individual Membership

An individual membership is a great option for a single person to join as a member of IFPUG and earn all member benefits, including eligibility to IFPUG certifications. Membership is non-transferable and the individual retains it regardless of their employer.

Corporate Memberships

Corporate memberships offer organizations an opportunity to become a member company and provide IFPUG membership benefits to all eligible employees of the organization. There are three types of corporate memberships:

Regular Corporate Membership:

Regular corporate memberships are intended for an organization located in a single metropolitan area. All individuals employed at the geographic location of a regular corporate member are eligible to receive member benefits, including eligibility for IFPUG certifications, except for voting privileges. Regular corporate members have two votes all IFPUG business matters.

Additional corporate sites (outside the metropolitan area but within the same legal entity) may apply for a corporate membership, which is available at a reduced rate (for each additional site). Contact IFPUG headquarters at [email protected] for more details.

Countrywide Corporate Membership:

Countrywide corporate memberships are intended for an organization that has employees located throughout one country. All individuals employed within the country are eligible to receive member benefits, including eligibility for IFPUG certifications, except for voting privileges. Countrywide corporate members have five votes all IFPUG business matters.

Worldwide Corporate Membership:

Worldwide corporate memberships are intended for an organization that has employees located globally. All individuals employed by the corporate member are eligible to receive member benefits, including eligibility for IFPUG certifications, except for voting privileges. Worldwide corporate members have ten votes all IFPUG business matters.

Entry-Level Memberships

IFPUG encourages students and young professionals that have an interest in function points to consider a student or junior membership. This is a great option to become a member of IFPUG and gain access to limited member benefits in the early stages of your career.

Student Membership:

A discounted student membership is available for individuals who are enrolled as a full-time student. Applicants are required to provide documentation verifying full-time enrollment as a student.

Student members are eligible to receive discounts on IFPUG publications, events and gain access to other member benefits. Students are ineligible to vote in all IFPUG business matters.

Junior Membership:

A complimentary junior membership is available for individuals who are under the age of 25. Applicants are required to provide documentation verifying the age requirements, typically a copy of a passport of valid ID.

Junior members are eligible to receive discounts on IFPUG publications, events and gain access to other member benefits. Students are ineligible for IFPUG certification and ineligible to vote in all IFPUG business matters.

University Memberships

An accredited institute, college, university, or other similar business of which its primary existence is the education and training of its registered students. A qualifying institute offers courses as part of a curriculum that results in a degree typically not less than two years, as well as four-year graduate and post-graduate degrees. *This membership type is under review and may undergo changes in near future

  • University/college members are eligible to take Workshops and attend conferences for 50% of the price in effect for the event. Meals are an additional cost.
  • The university/college and IFPUG will work together to integrate function point and SNAP information into the curriculum as appropriate.
  • The faculty members from the university/college will be provided electronically transmitted copies of the Counting Practices Manual (CPM) free.
  • IFPUG will license distribution of IFPUG publications to designated bookstores or copy centers to fulfill classroom requirements.
  • University/college members may purchase IFPUG publications at the member discount price through the IFPUG office.
  • IFPUG will provide a free copy of any publication to an instructor who is using IFPUG publications within their course that are required for student purchase for the course.

  • University/college members do not have voting privileges unless they pay the equivalent of the individual member price for each voting member.
  • The university/college must specify a primary contact for each department wishing to engage IFPUG.
  • Faculty member/Institution cannot further distribute the IFPUG Publications (including the CPM) to anyone free of charge, nor can they be placed on an Internet or Intranet web site.
  • Academic members will be encouraged to set up IFPUG Student Chapters.
  • Any function point and SNAP related articles that Academic Members publish should be made available for IFPUG to publish with permission.

The membership is renewable on a year-to-year basis. After the first one-year term, University members who comply with items 1 – 4 below are eligible to retain their University Membership for another year:

  1. a) Be the point of contact in actively promoting and teaching software metrics, including function points and SNAP, as part of your academic institution’s, university’s or college’s curriculum, or b) actively provide support for a research project sponsored by the Education Committee, including but not limited to completing the research project, or acting as faculty advisor to a graduate or senior thesis student.
  2. Write a minimum of a two-paragraph article for MetricViews outlining activities completed during the last academic year and proposed activities in the coming academic year.
  3. Complete and submit the request for University Membership form to the IFPUG office. We prefer this be done through E-mail ([email protected]), but postal mail is acceptable. Please mark to the attention of the Education Committee, and
  4. Submit a final report to the Education committee at the end of the academic year.

Regular Corporate Membership:

Become a Member

Once you have determined the membership type that fits your needs, you can join as a new member through a few easy steps.

The standard IFPUG membership year is July 1 – June 30. You may join anytime during the year through completing our online membership application and submitting payment for the corresponding annual membership dues.

If joining between January 1 and April 30 of any year, dues will be prorated equal to 50% of the annual dues amount.

If joining between May 1 and June 30 of any year, dues will be charged the full annual dues amount; however, membership will be awarded through June 30 of the following year. e.g. A person joining on May 1 will receive fourteen months membership for the price of twelve.

Renewal Policy

All IFPUG memberships are due for renewal before June 30 of each year. Individual members and key contacts from member organizations will receive notifications to renew membership and will have the ability to renew online.

Any IFPUG membership which is not renewed (postmarked) by September 1 will be terminated and changed to a non-member status. If a member does not renew before September 1 and their membership status is terminated, the member has the option to join IFPUG again through the new member process.

Certification Policy

IFPUG membership is required to sit for the various IFPUG certification examinations and continued membership is required to retain the certification. Membership requirements and dues must be maintained in addition to certification requirements and corresponding fees.

Certification Non-Renewal Penalty

In order to retain certification and membership privileges membership renewals must be received by July 1 each year. If, however a membership renewal is received by the IFPUG office after August 31st, reinstatement will require both the payment of the membership dues and a late fee. All certifications within the corporation are addressed by the reinstatement fees for regular, Countrywide, and Worldwide corporate members. Failure to reinstate your privileges before December 31st will cause the final forfeiture of all certification privileges without exception.

Countrywide Corporate Membership:

A holder of an IFPUG Certification (excluding Fellows) covered by a corporate membership shall maintain their certification for 90 days from the date of terminating employment with the corporate member, or from the date of termination of corporate membership. The grace period is granted on request by the person by contacting the IFPUG office.

During the grace period, the member will keep all benefits except to vote, to be nominated or nominate for the board. Current conditions when renewing the membership, individual or covered by a new corporate membership, are unchanged.

Volunteer with IFPUG

Once you become an IFPUG member, you may want to become an IFPUG volunteer. The strength and success of IFPUG lies in harnessing the creativity and energy of its members. IFPUG seeks to achieve this by inviting member participation on one or more of its committees.
